Stephen Readdie’s ‘Lighting the Way’ is a moving memoir of disaster, hope, and survival
Author Stephen Readdie draws upon details and events from his own life to create a beautifully uplifting memoir with Lighting the Way.
Beginning with a terrifying plane explosion, protagonist Michael Stephens’ life begins to change. This event is based on the author’s real-life experience of a harrowing plane explosion at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in 2001. While in the airport, the author witnessed a dreadful accident: a wing of the plane caught fire, leading to an explosion that rippled through the plane at lightning speed. It shattered windows to the left and right of him, but the one he was near was unbroken.

After
the terrifying plane explosion, Michael Stephens returns home safely,
only to be diagnosed with cancer a short while later. Again, this is an
occurrence from the author’s life. He was diagnosed with a type of
throat cancer, and he uses the character of Michael Stephens to work his
way through his diagnosis and subsequent struggle with the disease.
Finally,
Michael writes a book. As the author, himself, found, this was an
incredibly cathartic experience, helping him work his way through the
major, life-changing events that he himself survived. The result is the
inspiring story of one man’s incredible ability to bounce back from
disaster, finding himself on the other side of misfortune more whole
than before, stronger than ever, and ready to share his story with the
world.
A strikingly moving novel, Lighting the Way
begins with disaster and ends with hope, leaving the reader ready to
tackle the struggles in their own life, filled with a renewed sense of
hope. Beautifully written and told with a clear and vivid voice, Lighting the Way is a book that is not to be missed, and will certainly live on in readers long after the last page has been turned.
