How to Craft a Magical Book Title

By Earma Brown

Are you ready to create a magical book title? Webster defines magic as something that produces extraordinary results, as if by magic. Experts say book titles are responsible for 80% or more of a book's initial pulling power. The average reader will spend only 4-8 seconds on the cover.

The book cover's components on the outside help sell the message inside. So, to sell more books follow the tips below to create a magical book title that will produce extraordinary results:

1. Form a book title with a special twist.

"Tongue Fu!"
Make your book title original and unique by using a play on words, like above. Or use an old cliche with a new twist. Book titles like, "Climb Your Stairway to Heaven," "Woman Sense Rules," "Fit for Life." You can adapt a cliche to your title and make your book title a memorable one.

2. Produce the magic pill solution.

"Vitamins: The Essential Link to Victorious Living"
Does your book title solve a problem? Craft your title to answer the question and not just ask one. For example, "Vitamins?" or "Vitamins: the essential link to health." Prefer positive language over negative. You don't want to title a book with a negative statement like, "Without Exercise You'll Die Prematurely." Instead use "Exercise: The Essential Link to Long Living."

3. Create an alliteration melody in your book title.

Alliteration is using words in succession that start with the same letter. Alliteration also happens when titles include parallel construction or repeated consonants as used in the title and sub-title. For example, a friend used alliteration in her title, "WOW! Women of Worth: Creating a Life Full of Passion, Power & Purpose." The repeated consonants create a rhythm that cements the book's title in a reader's mind.

Tommy Newberry's "Success is Not an Accident! Change Your Choices, Change Your Life", the repeated consonants and the repeated word 'change' work together to emphasize the success technique.

4. Construct a book title with super connect words.

Psychological studies have proven that there are certain words that can help you connect to your potential readers and motivate them to buy from you. Choose from the list of words below that can help you connect.

Use words like: Free, Sale, How to, Healthy, Love, Now, Discover, Guarantee, Safe, Value, Introduce, Natural, New, Fun, Easy, Fast, Benefits, Save, Your, Precious, Right, Gain, Proven, Secret, You, Money, Penetrate, Solution, Alternative, Happy, Suddenly, Magic, Security, Advice, Proud, Comfortable.

5. Acknowledge your audience in the book title.

"Chicken Soup for Prisoners"
Including your audience in your book title gives your book a slant. Without a slant, your book may miss sales. A slanted book title helps your audience realize they need your book. For example, the Chicken Soup series for teenagers, mothers, even prisoners sold much better that the original more general Chicken Soup for the Soul. Give expert advice to a specific group of people. Target a group of people within your broad market.

Is your book title designed to hook your book readers? Titles set the stage for your potential audience. They either work to grab your potential reader by the collar and pull them in for the read or they don't.

Magical book titles create excitement, anticipation and enthusiasm for more. You want your titles to express the heart and passion of your message, right? Then write your book title to create extraordinary results that ignites interest in reading your important message.
