If at First You Don’t Succeed…

Don M. Winn’s Award-Winning Book “Chipper the Clown” Offers
Children an Important Lesson: Mentoring Helps Us Succeed

January is National Mentoring Month, and the colorful rhyming picture book Chipper the Clown by Don M. Winn is a great way to introduce young children to the idea that asking the right people for help and guidance can make a big difference when it comes to following their dreams. In this award-winning story, author Don M. Winn tells the tale of a man who follows his dream of becoming a clown, encounters stumbling blocks along the way, and eventually succeeds with the assistance of mentors.

Chipper McGraff has a passion for making people laugh, but he is stuck in a job that is not satisfying. Winn writes, “Chipper McGraff loved to joke and laugh, but the work that he did made him frown. For the work Chipper did was fishing for squid, when he’d much rather work as a clown.” One day,
Chipper decides to follow his heart and join the circus, but his opening night is an embarrassing failure because the audience boos him out of the ring.

At first, feeling defeated, he considers quitting, but when he seeks the advice of the more experienced clowns, he realizes that by making the changes they suggest, he can be a hit. Chipper goes out in the ring once more and receives the reward he had been looking for all of his life — making people laugh. “The staff was excited and the crowds were delighted; they hooted and hollered and laughed.”

Chipper the Clown encourages children to pursue their passions in life. It teaches them not to give up when they don't succeed the first time, but rather, to be willing to ask for help. The author includes a short list of questions at the end of the book to help parents start conversations about the topics illustrated in the story. Chipper the Clown has also been named among the best in family-friendly media, products and services by the Mom’s Choice Awards®. January is National Mentoring Month. Help your child recognize that mentors are all around us, and can make a real difference in our lives.
