Even Knights Face Bullies

Author Don M. Winn uses his gift for storytelling to write his first chapter book, ‘The Knighting of Sir Kaye’, which chronicles the story of a knight who must face bullying

Don M. Winn, best known for his engaging, funny children’s stories that are interwoven with meaningful lessons has turned his attention to a new challenge: chapter books.  In his new Sir Kaye series, he uses his undeniable gift for storytelling and voice that has garnered him countless fans to tell the story of Kaye, an ordinary boy who likes exploring and dreams of one day being a legendary knight, like his father.

In the first installment, The Knighting of Sir Kaye, young readers are whisked away to Knox, a land full of danger, where wicked knights are always causing trouble.  Through the story of Kaye, Winn deals with a hot-button issue that faces kids today: bullying.  First, Kaye has to deal with the local village bully, Charles, who constantly embarrasses him in front of others.  Like real-life bullies, Charles has a knack of finding the weak spot in Kaye’s “armor”: his fear that he isn’t good enough to become a knight.

Even after he is knighted, the bullying doesn’t stop.  There are much larger, older, dangerous bullies to contend with: other knights.  The knights aren’t even afraid of bullying the queen.

Readers will be captivated, turning pages to find out whether or not Kaye and Reggie can overcome the bullies and challenges they face and restore order to the land, and will, no doubt, be left anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series.  For many of Winn’s readers, this will offer the perfect transition into chapter books, allowing them to grow with their favorite author.  For new readers, The Knighting of Sir Kaye will introduce them to Winn’s signature style that has been winning over young readers and parents alike for years.  Parents will appreciate Winn’s ability to get their children interested in reading and a way to talk to their children about bullying.

Don Winn is the author and creator of the Cardboard Box Adventures series of interactive children’s books.  Winn was inspired to write children’s stories by the warm bond that it creates between children and the people that they are reading with.

Some of his titles include: Twitch the Squirrel and the Forbidden Bridge, The Higgledy-Piggledy Pigeon, and The Tortoise and the Hairpiece.  He has also released two installments in his Sir Kaye series of chapter books.  Winn conducts school visits that include reading with projected pictures, Q & A sessions, book signings, and workshops for both students and parents.

This is his first chapter book, and he is hard at work on the second Sir Kaye book in the series.  Winn decided to write The Knighting of Sir Kaye at the request of many of the students he has met while making school visits.
