Dr.Satwant Kaur, HP Distinguished Technologist, believes that human error will soon be eliminated from our daily transportation.
Some might say that exciting, futuristic predictions are Dr. Satwant Kaur's forte. Her many awards and accolades celebrate unparalleled accomplishments in technology, and her version of the future can often seem like science fiction. However, humanity has made great technological strides, and will surely continue to do so; Dr. Kaur believes that in the near future, technology will completely alter how we drive our cars.
Humanity has known roughly a century with the automobile, perhaps the greatest innovation of its time. Personal travel before the car was slow, uncomfortable, and often reliant on farm animals. Now, about a hundred years later, Dr. Kaur predicts a new, surprising future for cars: that they will become autonomous and self-driving. These self-driving cars could be a reality by as early as 2020, utilizing vehicle-to-vehicle communications technology. According to Dr. Kaur, machines communicate better with other machines than with humans; this is due to predictable programmatic behaviors. Also, the elimination of human drivers would eliminate most car accidents, since many result from human error- we bring with us the element of surprise, often causing these crashes. Therefore, the roadways of the future will be much safer.
Dr. Kaur notes that the easiest way to drive will be using the new technology for autonomous cars. She also believes that roads will be dedicated to the sole use of self-driving cars. Autonomous cars will also be extremely helpful they will be able to recognize and avoid pedestrians, and will be able to identify and avoid construction or other roadway hazards. These may seem like outlandish advancements; however, it isn't as radical to us now as the idea of a pocket-sized computer was thirty years ago. As always, Dr. Kaur reminds us that impressive and radical changes may be nearer than we might think.
