Dr. Satwant Kaur Gives Us a Peek at the Medical Industry’s Great Strides

Kaur, the ‘first lady of emerging technologies’ details some of the remarkable results of the medical industry’s technology boom.

Dr. Satwant Kaur, who gave the keynote address at the 2014 IT Expo in Miami later in January, has always made soaring predictions about the future of the medical industry. In speeches as well as her book, Transitioning Embedded Systems to Intelligent Environments, she treats listeners and readers alike with glimpses of a future that sounds straight out of science fiction. Dr. Kaur predicts a strange and exciting future, and as technology within the medical community advances rapidly, some of these fantastic changes will come sooner rather than we might think.

To understand some of Dr. Kaur’s predictions for the medical industry, one must first understand that in Intelligent Environments, countless connected embedded devices connect us with all things in our environment—whether it is at home, at the bottom of our oceans, or in our own clothes. Due to this, Intelligent health environments will be able to provide healthcare to remote patients, provide continuous biomedical monitoring, and utilize mobile technology to monitor health conditions.

Medical personnel will eventually be able to make better diagnosis after new IT infrastructures enable widespread information exchange. Also, Dr. Kaur assures that Intelligent remote health management technologies will move us toward a more proactive care model. For example, smart knee braces are embedded with motion sensors with which physicians monitor rehabilitating patients remotely after their discharge from the hospital. As patients exercise, the knee braces wirelessly send data to the doctor for view on any device. Such intelligent health environments also provide healthcare for specialized illness where there are shortages of specialists themselves.

As we go forward in 2014, more advancements will doubtlessly be made to make diagnosis and treatment easier on both patient and doctor; with her expertise and wisdom, Dr. Kaur is the perfect person to ease us into the medical industry of the future.
